Herod became a master at transferring the symbols of his reign into stone, with the idea that by the time eyewitness descriptions of what he had accomplished filtered back to the villages and fields of Judea and Galilee and then all the way to Rome, the mental pictures they created would be even greater than the reality itself. And what better image was there to portray than that Herod had one-upped the Creator?

The list of Herod's building projects is long. Although he built actively throughout his reign, his most impressive projects were undertaken between 25 and 14 B.C., after his kingdom was secure and while he still had ample energy to expend in the effort. While the extant remains of Herod's works are impressive enough yet today, equally so was the vision to build in the first place (the blueprint sessions must have been fascinating) and the administrative skill that it took to coordinate the planning, supply and implementation of not just one, but several projects at the same time. The sheer magnitude of it all, so much in such a short time, was unparalleled for Judea and, pound for pound, probably hasn't been matched to this day.

Herodian Jerusalem. While Jerusalem received special attention by every member of the Herodian family who ruled over the city, the architectural footprint of Herod the Great on its urban landscape was the most enduring. Our knowledge of the shape and character of Herodian Jerusalem comes partly from first-century A.D. written sources such as Josephus and the New Testament, partly from archaeology (Jerusalem is the most intensively excavated living city on earth) and partly from geographical and logical common sense. Still, many gaps in our understanding remain. What is known about first-century Jerusalem reveals a city with a complex and expensive infrastructure, a place that was attractive to see and pleasant to call home.
